The Heavenly Plant: Parijata

"FLOWERS ARE THE SWEETEST THINGS GOD EVER MADE AND FORGOT TO PUT A SOUL INTO - HENRY BEECHER"

Ncytanthes arbor-tristis : The Night Blooming Jasmine

Parijata is a small tree, native to South Asia and southeast Asia.

According to Hindu mythology, Parijata was owned by the Indra and planted in savarga (located between  heaven and earth). But  Lord Krishna to sort a quarrel between Satyabhama and Rukmini ( the two wives of lord Krishna), stole this tree from savarga.Though the plant was in backyard of Satyabhama , the flowers fall in the backyard of Rukmini(his favorite).
This tree is also known Kalpa Taru as it is believed to grant all the wishes.

This plant produces very fragrant 5 to 8 lobed white flowers with an orange center and heart shaped flat seeds.

This tree is sometimes known as 'Tree Of Sorrow' coz the flowers lose their brightness during daytime and there is a romantic story around it. It says that the princess Parijata fell in love with the sun. When he deserted her she committed suicide and a tree sprung from the ashes. Unable to face the lover who left her ,the flowers sheds like tear drops before the sun rise.
The flower is the official flower of West Bengal(India).

The flower is used as a source of yellow dye and the leaves ,bark ,seeds of this plant have been used in Ayurveda and Homeopathy ( for fevers, headache, malaria, dengue).
The oil is used for menstruation and blocked menstruation.

Thanks to Lord Krishna for bringing this heavenly plant to earth  :-p ......
