Great Banyan  (Ficus benghalensis)


The Great Banyan is a banyan tree  located in Acharya Jagadish Chandra bose Indian Botanic Graden,Howrah), near Kolkata, India.The Great Banyan tree is over 250 years old.
Its main trunk became diseased after it was struck by two cyclones , so in 1925 the main trunk of the tree was amputated.





A sculpture is made on the main truck which is not visible to the visitors.





The Great Banyan looks more like a forest than an individual tree with its large number of aerial roots.

It has at present 3772 aerial roots reaching down to the ground as  prop roots. 
It is believed to have, the second largest  canopy.
The area occupied by this  tree is about 18,918 square meters and the present crown of the tree has a circumference of 486 m with  the highest branch rising  to 24.5 m.

                                             This is a place where botany comes to alive and 
 every day an uncountable number of people visit this place just  to see our great grandfather...
